Advantage Barca Advantage Barca

  • Barcelona head into the 2nd leg of this tie with a crucial away goal, thanks to Thierry Henrys 67th minute equaliser. In the opening five minutes of this match Barca were the more composed of the two teams, knocking the ball around nicely without really penetrating the Lyon defence. Then on seven minutes Lyon were awarded a free kickon the left edge of the penalty area, Juninho took two steps and fired the ball over the head of the Barcelona goalkeeper Victor Valdes. It was the former Brazil internationals 42nd goal from a free kick since joining Lyon eight years ago.Lyon were playing at a frantic pace and had Barca trapped in their own half and had several chances to extend their lead before a Samuel Etoo shot on 14 minutes came back off the post. It was mostly Barca now dictating the play and only Benzema, with a shot from nowhere that ended up hitting the post, in the 27th minute, posed a genuine threat to Valdes. In the second half Barca started getting into their game, but still struggled to create any clear-cut opportunities. Lyon won a free kick in the 54th minute and Juninhos shot from 35 yards was almost fumbled by Valdes. The goal finally came in the 67th minute following two consecutive corners. In the first, Piqu came agonisingly close to an equaliser, but the ball was deflected away for a second corner. There was better fortune the second time round, Marquez flicked the ball over to the far post, and there was Henry waiting to score with a low and perfectly executed header.
